Trump Considers Legal ‘Facts’ in Diddy Pardon Decision

Former President Donald Trump has once again put himself in the headlines for his possible role in the case of hip-hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs. When asked on the Newsmax cable network show Finnerty on Friday, Aug. 1, if he’d be interested in helping the Bad Boy Records founder after his recent conviction, Trump said he might.

Combs was found guilty in early July on one federal count, transportation with intent to promote prostitution. But he was acquitted of other, more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The trial, which lasted more than seven weeks, also included charges and testimony from singer Cassie Ventura. Ventura accused Combs of abuse and trafficking during a previous relationship with Combs. Combs has denied all allegations of abuse.

Trump, who was asked if he would issue a presidential pardon to Combs, said, “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent.” Trump then continued with a mixed message of vagueness and familiarity. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

Trump also went on to reference his and Combs’ previous relationship during the interview. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump continued. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Past Comments on Pardon

Trump was similarly asked about Combs’ case back in May during an Oval Office press briefing. On that occasion, the question was from Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. Trump said back then that he would “look at the facts” before considering whether or not to grant Combs a pardon. He also stressed that his opinion of Combs’ feelings for him wouldn’t have any impact on that decision.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said to Doocy. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

The case continues to develop for Combs as his conviction moves into the sentencing phase. The federal charges against Combs date back to a sweeping federal investigation that led to the July conviction. Combs was acquitted of the most serious charges and only found guilty of transportation with intent to promote prostitution. But that conviction still can lead to up to 20 years in prison. Combs is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 3.

The high-profile trial has brought to light the dynamics of celebrity justice, presidential powers, and personal relationships, and how they may or may not impact the processes for clemency. The celebrity trial has developed additional layers as Trump has mused publicly about a possible pardon for Combs. Despite a possible rift in their relationship from the past, Trump was still giving indications that he was open to considering a fair assessment of the case.

“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said. “But I guess it wasn’t as good o victory.”

A full clip of Trump’s comments during the Finnerty interview has been posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) and has been met with reaction from political pundits, hip-hop fans, and others thwholosely follow the news. At this point, no decision has been made by Trump on whether a pardon will be granted. But his recent public statements have certainly kept the option open, as well as the controversy surrounding it.

For the time being, all eyes are on Combs as he heads into sentencing this October. Until then, there will be continued speculation on whether Trump might exercise his powers and issue a presidential pardon to Sean “Diddy” Combs.
