Apple TV+’s Invasion takes the battle to the alien mothership

There’s a good chance that you didn’t see it either. Invasion is Apple TV+’s kind of high-profile take on the alien-invasion narrative. At the same time, it can be tough to watch in 2025 between two of the service’s other sci-fi juggernauts, Silo and Foundation. If you are a fan of the first two seasons, you are part of a niche group, and if you have some criticisms of the show, you are not alone. Not that the series has been struggling with critics or viewers—far from it—it just hasn’t quite hit a level that fully satisfies fans or converts skeptics.

For the first season in particular, the slow-burn approach frustrated audiences who expected more in the way of alien action. But among its supporters, there’s been a less-than-unanimous take on Invasion, with a love/hate relationship that may surprise for a seemingly straightforward hit.

The cinematography has been excellent from the start, and the showrunners have tried to go bigger and bolder with their storytelling themes, even if some ideas have lost focus. David Weil (Hunters) created Invasion, with executive producer Simon Kinberg. Kinberg is probably best known for his work on a number of the most popular X-Men movies and also as a producer/writer for The Martian, an Oscar-nominated film. The Invasion premise has always had an appeal to it in this highly anticipated era of alien-invasion tales. But rather than going big with a big-budget action take, Invasion is as much about the aliens as it is about their impact on regular people in different corners of the world. The show has mostly been in English, but it has also featured Japanese and Pashto to give this global epic the perspective of regular people.

Alien-Invasion Season 1 Focused on the Early Days of Suspense and Mystery

As mentioned, the first season of Invasion has been a tale of small moments and more intimate drama. It put a lot of emphasis on character dynamics that might have felt at odds with what the audience might have been expecting from a series about a threat from another world. But the show kept a slow-burn rhythm early on and made it about people dealing with a situation that changed from minute to minute. As a result, there were moments of existential dread and desperation, along with some truly heart-wrenching choices made by some of the characters. The pacing was still slow in places, but the entire Season 2 show had momentum to it, setting up what Season 3 will deliver.

Season 3 Unites Characters in Mission to Battle Aliens in the Mothership

Season 3 of Invasion picks up two years later, but the threat has advanced and changed. According to the synopsis, the different perspectives from Seasons 1 and 2 will come together for the first time. The major characters that have been introduced across the seasons will team up for the high-stakes action as they make a move against the alien mothership. The Seasons 1 and 2 storylines were far-flung, but now, the characters will finally work together on an epic scale, uniting for a common goal.

The invasive species has also transformed into its “apex” form, spreading tendrils of the species quickly across Earth. This higher-stakes Season 3 arc has the potential for epic payoffs and also more definitive action and drama surrounding the characters’ conflict with the aliens. The focus is on the survivors who must use every ounce of skill, knowledge, and resiliency to battle the threat in the hopes of saving what remains of humanity. As the mission ramps up and they prepare to take on the aliens on their turf, there will be new alliances and unexpected fractures between characters that have been forged over the years.

The main cast members returning from previous seasons include Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the always-controversial tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. A new series regular will be Erika Alexander, an actress with a long and impressive resume who will be a welcome addition to the growing Invasion cast.
