RCMP Lay Additional Theft Charges Against Housekeeper
A housekeeper from central Alberta is facing several new theft charges after an alleged break and enter in Carstairs, located about 55 kilometres north of Calgary. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) report that the woman had previously been charged with theft from another residence in August.
Details of the Carstairs Incident
On September 18, RCMP received a report of a break and enter from a home in Carstairs. The victims stated that their house had been entered while they were away and that gold, silver, and other valuables were missing. Authorities say the investigation used surveillance footage from a nearby building to identify the suspect, a 69-year-old woman working as a housekeeper and living in Didsbury.
Pawned Items and Value of Stolen Goods
According to RCMP, the suspect allegedly pawned items taken from the Carstairs home, including the gold and silver, making approximately $87,000 from the sale of the stolen valuables. The investigation led officers to obtain a search warrant for the housekeeper's Didsbury residence.
Search Uncovers More Evidence
During the search of the suspect's home, police reportedly found identity documents and contraband tobacco believed to be intended for sale. Following the search, several theft charges were laid, including break and enter, theft over $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and possession of non-stamped tobacco with intent to sell.
Upcoming Court Appearance
The housekeeper is scheduled to make a court appearance in Didsbury on October 19. RCMP state the criminal investigation is ongoing and involves multiple charges stemming from the recent Carstairs theft as well as a previous incident.
Previous Property Theft in August
Prior to the recent charges, the same woman had been charged with property theft in Mountain View County on August 3. In the earlier incident, authorities allege she stole items from a home where she was employed as a housekeeper. The house's security camera was also reportedly removed during the theft. Police arrested her, seized her vehicle, and recovered the stolen property. At the time, she was identified as a resident of Cremona and charged with theft under $5,000 and being unlawfully in a dwelling house.
