Alberta employers are seeing significant financial and workforce gains by investing in integrated mental health care programs, according to a recent Greenshield Canada report.
Study Links Investment to Returns
The report, informed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the 2025 Benefits Canada Healthcare Survey, found that for every dollar employers invested in integrated mental health care, a return of $1.50 was realized by the second year. This calculation focuses exclusively on reduced mental health claims and does not yet account for additional savings from lower absenteeism and disability costs. In a rapidly changing workplace landscape, the financial benefits of employer mental health initiatives have drawn growing attention in Alberta and across Canada.
Rising Need for Employer Mental Health Support
The findings underscore an urgent need for employer mental health solutions. More than half of Canadian employees surveyed in 2025 reported workplace impacts from mental health challenges, leading to increased claims and drops in productivity. Organizations that proactively enhanced their mental health coverage witnessed positive changes in workforce morale and well-being, reinforcing the importance of sustained mental health investment across Alberta’s diverse business sectors.
Faster Access Spurs Mental Health Improvement
Employers adopting integrated mental health models reported that three out of four plan members scheduled a mental health therapy session within one week of seeking help. Early access was closely linked to a 25% greater clinical mental health improvement among those treated promptly, compared to previous approaches. The value of connected mental health support has become a strategic advantage, enabling Alberta employers to better support employee mental health and well-being.
High Satisfaction With Mental Health Benefits
Accessible and coordinated mental health benefits play a central role in employee satisfaction. The report notes that 96% of plan members chose to remain with their initial therapist, while most reported noticeable progress by the third session. Such results reflect both the quality of mental health coverage and the impact of an integrated mental health strategy for organizations.
Breaking Down Silos in Mental Health Support
Joe Blomeley of Greenshield Health emphasized the value of breaking down silos between insurance plans and direct mental health support. By aligning mental health benefits with access to timely care, employers ensure employees receive earlier and more effective support, addressing needs before difficulties escalate. This integration is increasingly necessary as organizations across Alberta face growing employee mental health demands.
Alberta’s Opportunity for Mental Health Investment
The Greenshield Canada research concludes that Alberta employers have both a responsibility and an opportunity to drive positive change through ongoing mental health investment. Adopting connected care models not only improves outcomes for individual employees but also strengthens organizational resilience and financial stability. As mental health care rises on the corporate agenda, integrating support, insurance, and therapy will distinguish progressive employers and sustain healthy workplaces in Alberta for years to come.
