Hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg has generated new headlines for criticizing LGBTQ+ inclusion in children’s films. Citing a same-sex couple in Pixar’s new movie Lightyear, he said that he found it hard to explain the “queer s—” in the film to his grandson while watching the movie with him in theaters.

The rapper and music producer made the statements on the It’s Giving podcast last week with host Sarah Fontenot. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for,” Snoop said. The artist revealed that he took his grandson to see the film. But when the character was revealed to be in a same-sex relationship, he was “lost for words” trying to explain it to his grandson.

Lightyear is a 2022 animated adventure film directed by Angus MacLane, a spinoff of Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. In the film, Buzz Lightyear is a space hero, who is a character called Andy, who makes a toy version of him. Lightyear features a same-sex couple, which was the topic of controversy because they shared a kiss. The moment was cut from the film following backlash, but later reinstated after a wave of internal criticism.

Responding to the moment when his grandson Snoop revealed that he found it difficult to explain how two women could make a child together. “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he said, continuing that he finally explained to his grandson to keep watching. “Why, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” he said, laughing. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”

Snoop further said that the moment made him lose sleep because he did not know how to answer such questions from children. “It threw me for a loop,” he said of the scene in the film. “These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

Fans Boycott Performance at Australian Football League Final

Snoop Dogg’s recent comments on Lightyear quickly angered fans online, with the rapper scheduled to perform at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final in September. Reports by PinkNews revealed that AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan stated that the league will stick by their initial decision to hire Snoop. The AFL has not issued any official statement about rescinding the rapper’s booking.

Lightyear was previously in the news when it was released in June 2022. The film features a same-sex kiss as one of the lead characters is in a relationship with another woman. The scene was met with criticism from conservatives, who said that it was not appropriate for a children’s film. The backlash was so loud that Disney briefly pulled the scene from the film.

But Disney restored the scene following complaints from Pixar employees and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. In a Reuters Television interview, the film’s voice-over actor, Chris Evans, spoke out against the backlash. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said, while being asked about the LGBTQ+ representation. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

Lightyear is a spinoff of the Toy Story series and follows Buzz Lightyear, an intergalactic hero. Buzz appears as an animated toy action figure in the Toy Story films. The series reimagines his character as a “real” person who inspired the creation of Buzz Lightyear. The film did not make a huge profit at the box office despite early projections. Lightyear grossed just over $226 million on a $200 million budget.
