Strange New Worlds S3 Tackles New Civilizations and Dangers
Paramount+ has released the official trailer for the upcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The new installment will premiere on July 17, 2025.
Showrunners Meana Lalama and Akiva Goldsman took to Twitter to share the trailer two days before the premiere date. The series was last given a brief teaser trailer back in April. The new trailer provides the first glimpse at the season after the cliffhanger ending that Season 2 concluded on.
Spoilers for the end of Season 2 are below.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 3 Trailer Spoilers
The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds concluded with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise coming under attack from the Gorn, who were attempting to conquer a Federation colony world. In the battle, several of the crew of the Enterprise are taken hostage, along with other survivors. This forces Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to decide in the season finale; he can follow orders and retreat as Starfleet has requested, or he can disobey direct orders and attempt to rescue the hostages. As expected, Pike decides to choose the latter, leaving his crew in dire straits.
The official trailer begins with brief clips that had previously been released last October at the New York City Comic-Con, which included the ending of the previous season and the start of Season 3. In this footage, the crew of the Enterprise is engaged in a classic “Star Trek” space battle against the Gorn. The trailer features similar action-packed scenes in this vein, as well as Pike making a decision that could determine the fate of the Enterprise and her crew. The trailer also shows that the Gorn conflict will be concluded by the end of the next season. Of course, once this conflict is over, the showrunners are promising new dangers and adventures.
The new season will still be led by Pike as captain, but the crew will not be completely safe once the Gorn are dealt with. The trailer suggests that the crew will not only find a resolution to their conflict with the Gorn but also encounter a new villain who will test their loyalties, mettle, and endurance. Showrunner Lalama also told Entertainment Weekly that Season 3 will be “big” and will have a focus on character development as well as the usual storytelling elements. The new trailer also teases multiple episodes that go in other genre directions, even deviating from traditional Star Trek norms and themes. There will be episodes that focus on faith, duty, romance, as well as lighter moments, like comedy and mystery. The writers have also stated that the new episodes will feature genre experimentation that the “Star Trek” series hasn’t tried before.
Returnees will make up the rest of the main cast and recurring characters. Additionally, the series will welcome Cillian O’Sullivan in an unknown role. O’Sullivan will be playing Dr. Roger Korby, who originated on the classic Star Trek: The Original Series and was played by Michael Strong. In the Strange New Worlds continuity, Dr. Korby is known as a famous archaeologist and medical archaeologist, and as the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). His unexpected return to Starfleet will no doubt present him with some drama, both at work and in his personal life. Chapel has since formed a relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck), which means that his relationship with Chapel will have to be explained to his new Vulcan friend.
Guest stars joining the cast for the third season include Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both of whom are comedians. In fact, in the brief teaser trailer released back in April, it was suggested that there would be at least one episode for each of the show’s tonal shifts: an episode of serious adventure, and then one that was lighter. This is supported by the main trailer as well. In addition to action-packed adventures, the new trailer shows the Enterprise crew bonding in off-duty moments, navigating a delicate romantic subplot, and dealing with the effects of an experimental science explosion.
The most intriguing part of the new trailer, however, is a brief cameo from James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). Kirk has a moment in the captain’s chair. His role in the coming story is not revealed, but the implication is that he is being trained by Pike to step in as acting captain when needed. The Captain’s log Pike records before Kirk’s appearance in the chair seems to confirm this. Pike reassures Kirk by saying, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
The trailer then ends on a comedic beat, with what appears to be a rare joke on the show involving Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan character. The joke itself is a classic: Spock initiates a “high five” with Oswalt’s Vulcan, successfully first, then “too slow” when the other Vulcan requests he go “down low.” After the other Vulcan character questions, “Why would you do that?” Spock simply responds, “Because you are too slow.” It’s a small but endearing moment, and a nod to the show’s sense of humor.
