Take, for example, Pascal’s recent interview with Sky News in London about his role in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In the four-minute interview, Pascal, who plays Dr. Reed Richards, sits down for a conversation that you usually only see journalists have with actors during awards seasons.

Sky News, which would cover the film’s press junket, asked Pascal the kinds of questions you see at the Disney bubble:

“So, Dr. Reed Richards has to save the world? What’s your greatest superhero skill?”

But Pascal took the opportunity to open up about what it was like to speak your mind in a media world that can twist and amplify one sentence into a media debacle in a matter of seconds.

“I think it’s very easy to get scared, no matter what you sort of talk about,” he answered.

Context can be the end for a casual thought. One sentence without explanation can fester online, get reposted on TikTok, or be boiled down into one inflammatory headline. “There are so many different ways that things can get kind of fractured and have a life of itself,” Pascal added, and it’s all easy to happen.

“I think the more that I learn and I experience, the more conscious of all that I become, and so I think that it’s very easy to get scared no matter what you sort of talk about.”

Fear can, of course, make a human want to stop talking. But, as he often does, Pascal would not leave it there.

“There’s one thing that you can say and no matter what your intention behind it, it is lost in all of these different headlines, I suppose—but I’ll never shut up.”

In The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Pascal plays Reed Richards, the leader of the titular Fantastic Four, as he juggles trying to be the best human being he can be, preparing to be the parent of a child with Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), and doing what he was always destined for—saving the world.

It’s a fitting parallel because, outside of Marvel Studios, The Mandalorian, and the Daniel Weinstock-led Project LULLABY, Pascal has been vocal on several social issues and charities. From Doctors Without Borders to The Trevor Project, the actor uses his over 11 million Instagram following to share more than just how his character manages his work-life balance.

For example, he regularly raises awareness about humanitarian and global social issues, such as blocking food in Gaza and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. A few months ago, Pascal was spotted in a “Protect The Dolls” shirt, showing up in full solidarity and earning his fair share of meme material.
